It is that time when everyone starts setting new goals for the New Year...What do you want out of 2016? What do you want to accomplish? What do you hope for? What will you be working towards?
New Year Resolutions are not new at all....Wikipedia tells us that the Babylonians made promises to their gods at the new year to pay back debts and return anything they borrowed (check your cupboards!).
It seems that most of January is flooded with social media updates on resolutions...and mostly they have to do with weight loss...strange!
The Three Broads have made their resolutions! What does 2016 hold in store for you?
Addie's Resolution:
Well, I am not really making a resolution this year. WHAT?!?! I know! I am making a To-Do List!! I LOVE lists! What better time than NOW to make a list of what I hope to work on and accomplish in this new year.
1. Continue my journey with health and fitness. (See above social media reference - ha!!)
2. Visit a place (or maybe 2) that I have never been to before.
3. Try a new restaurant. (Yes, I have to put that on the list or it may not happen. sad)
4. Get a facial. (Never had one! )
5. Actually pay attention to my house. (I always mean to clean and organize the office and guest room or decorate any room in my home but then I spend my money on shoes and clothes!)
6. Sew and Knit, again. (I haven't done this in so long, I might need refresher courses!)
I think my list is actually longer, but I am really trying to check these things off!! Hopefully this won't overwhelm me....I am counting on all of you to keep me on track!!
Hilary's Resolutions (Goals):
I have never been one to set serious resolutions. Usually, I say that I want to get back into shape which lasts until about June. Then, June comes and it is time for summer fun with friends. This year I’m going to set goals.
My first goal is to balance fun and exercise. I think any diet or plan where we deprive ourselves of something we love is immediately set up for failure. So, I am not denying myself anything I love this year (French fries, chocolate, beverages, etc.). Instead, I am going to just make an effort to balance those activities.
My second goal is to recognize the moment. I feel so thankful for where I am at in my life right now, and I need to pay more attention to that happiness. I plan to make notes of the happy times rather than the mad times. We all see or hear every day just how short life can be. Let’s have fun and feel the greatness. YOLO!
Shannon's Quiet Inspiration:
My inspiring niece Kelsey T. and truly amazing friend, Cindy M., started choosing a word or theme instead of a resolution to inspire their thoughts and actions throughout the year. I have decided to follow their lead and have chosen my path for 2016. As I approach that "big" birthday (thankfully still a few years away), I want to make sure that I am still kicking...still edgy with a driven desire to be all I can be for myself and those people I come in contact with. In that vein, I choose PASSION AND PURPOSE.
I am going to start by taking stock in all the things I LOVE... my faith in God, my husband, my children, my granddaughters (and I will welcome a grandson to our brood...a new precious being to love), my father, sisters, nieces, and nephews, my family, my friends and my students; my hometown (I love Monticello and all that it has to offer!); my job (it doesn't get any better than teaching), golf and exercise. These people and things fuel my desire to live passionately... I look forward to creating incredible experiences in 2016!
I am going to look to the past for inspiration in creating a purpose. My Mother loved to ride a bicycle. (Thank you Rebecca...the necklace is a treasure and I wear it often to remember!) My Mother described the freedom that she felt when she first realized that she could adventure on her own. Look out bike paths! I will be riding you - HARD- in 2016! My biggest challenge will be the 51 miles and one bridge I plan to tackle in the Zoo-De-Mack (See you there Mr. Winings!). RIDE Shannon, RIDE! (and get some cushioned bike pants!)
