January is the month of the year that allows us to wipe the slate clean and begin anew. We Broads have shared our resolutions, goals and themes for the year. In that spirit, we have decided to challenge ourselves to learn two new things during this 2016 adventure.
Why is learning important?
Helps you achieve your full potential
Builds/Boosts confidence
Leads to a better quality of life
Is FUN
B.B. King said that "The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you."
Need we say more?!?! What will you choose to learn this year?
Shannon's Learning Goals
1. Sew Button (that actually stays on) On My Own Clothes: In the summer of 1986, while traveling on a family trip to NYC to celebrate the Centennial of the Statue of Liberty (And see Neil Diamond ... YAY!!!), my patient mother tried to teach me this important skill. Unfortunately the not-so-interested seventeen year-old Shannon, was not receptive to the opportunity. Thirty years later I realize...BIG MISTAKE! I am embarrased to admit that I literally have thrown clothing away instead of save them because the button had popped off (no expanding waistline comments PLEASE!). I am looking at this as a liberating opportunity.
2. Learn to Utilize Technology to my Advantage without FEAR: I love the idea of technology. I am fortunate to have lots of technological access. Why then do I still carry three calendars in my bag every day? The simple answer is lack of confidence. I am going to tackle my technological insecurities and embrace the cyber world!
Hilary's Learning Goal
I want to learn is how to create and stick to a budget. The way I see it is that there is no reason to wait to be financially smart. I have read a few headlines lately that discuss how few people in the United States have enough in their savings accounts to handle an emergency. We are professional credit users, but we do not make an effort to add to savings. In 2016, I want to learn how to be disciplined and stick to a budget.
I am not going to share personal details, but I would like to share some online resources so that you can create a budget too. There are hundreds of posts on Pinterest and the Internet with budget tools. The one that I found that was free is from Frugal Fanatic. My ultimate goal is to learn financial discipline.
Addie's Learning Goals
1. I want to learn how to Stand Up Paddle Surf. This is where you literally stand up on a surfboard and paddle. I know...kind of random but also gutsy for a girl who really can't swim. BUT I have seen people do this and it looks so awesome. I want to experience it for myself.
2. I want to learn how to make an article of clothing. I can sew blankets and simple things like pillowcases but I want to make something I can wear...and I don't want it to look like I made it! I have wanted to do this FOREVER but have never made it a priority to learn. This is the year!
